Many homes have extinguishers that they are unsure of their age or if they are even in working condition. How do you know if your extinguisher needs servicing? If your using a dry chemical extinguisher, which is most common – it should be professionally serviced every 6 and 12 years. Annual inspections in a residential setting do not need to be done professionally, but it is highly recommended as it is a small price to pay to ensure they are in good working order.

If you would like to have your fire extinguisher serviced you can drop it off and pick it up at our shop located within Ed’s Gas Club.

Fire Extinguishers

A fire extinguisher is something that is not always thought about until you need one and then it becomes your first line of defence. We strongly recommend business and home-owners to think ahead of time about their fire safety and be prepared.

Choosing a Fire Extinguisher

When choosing which extinguisher type is best for you, start with identifying which class type extinguisher you will need. For household use, an ABC Dry-Chemical is the most common.

Standard classifications of fire:

  • Class A – Fires that involve combustible solids like wood, cloth, paper, and plastic
  • Class B – Fires that involve flammable liquids like gasoline
  • Class C – Fires that involve electrical wiring and appliances
  • Class D – Fires that involve metals usually found in laboratories like magnesium
  • Class K – Fires that involve grease and oils usually used in commercial cooking applications

Types of Portable Fire Extinguishers

  • Class ABC
  • Class BC
  • Class D
  • Class K
  • Co2 – Class BC. Contain pure carbon dioxide which is a clean extinguishant, leaving no residue. Suitable for sensitive electrical equipment
  • Pressurized Water – Used in class A fires, also the only type to be used on areas containing oxidizers such as pool chemicals
  • Halotron I – A clean agent extinguisher which leaves no residue and is safe for delicate electronics. It is electrically non-conductive, most environmentally friendly and extremely low in toxicity. Rated for class ABC fires.
  • FE-36 – A Clean agent extinguisher which leaves no residue and is safe for delicate electronics. It is electrically non-conductive, environmentally friendly and extremely low in toxicity. Rated for class ABC fires.

Fire Extinguisher Inspections

Extinguishers are required to be inspected and tested at regular intervals as per the National Fire Protection Association. Our certified technicians provide the services required by the NFPA to keep your equipment operational, up to date and in full compliance.

Monthly interval inspections should be done to ensure good working order. Basic monthly checks can be done by home-owners, a designated employee or inspection agency.

Basic monthly inspection

-The fire extinguisher is in an accessible location, free of obstruction and visible
-The fire extinguisher Pressure gauge is indicating in the green zone
-The fire extinguisher Safety pin is in place
-The fire extinguisher Tube or nozzle is clear from debris or obstructions
-The fire extinguisher Is free from physical damage or corrosion

Annual Inspection of Fire Extinguisher

An annual inspection must be completed by a certified technician, the technician will complete the following steps:

-Ensure that there is no physical damage or corrosion.
-Ensure nozzle is clear of blockage
-Pressure is stable and showing in the green zone
-All labels and appropriate information are legible and accurate
-Weigh the unit to ensure it is in accordance with manufactures requirements
-Ensure free movement of internal powder
-Replace the tamper seal and ensure pin is secure and functional
-Ensure that the unit is not due for an internal examination which occurs every 6 or 12 years.
-Once inspection is complete the certified technician will retag the unit with a new tag valid for one year.

Six-year Inspection

During a six-year internal inspection our technician will properly and safely discharge the extinguisher into a closed containment system. The technician will then perform an internal examination, looking for any signs of corrosion or defects. Mechanisms will be cleaned and lubricated prior to re-installing. The extinguisher will be filled back to required weight with appropriate extinguishing agent and repressured. A six-year Inspection is indicated by a dated collar ring installed between the cylinder and handle. A tamper proof sticker will also be adhered to the back of the unit indicating the six-year maintenance service has been completed.

12-year Inspection

During a twelve-year internal inspection our technician will follow the same process as a six-year inspection but in addition a hydrostatic test will be completed. This is done by thoroughly cleaning the interior of the cylinder and pressurizing the cylinder with water to the specified pressure indicated by the manufacture. If the cylinder passes the required pressure test it is drained and dried prior to refilling. This service is indicated by a specific label on the cylinder which also indicates the pressure that it was tested to.

According to the National Fire Protection Association “Fire extinguishers shall be subject to maintenance of not more than 1 year or when specifically indicated by an inspection. Basic fire extinguishers require a 6-year service every sixth year from date of manufacture or date of last hydrotesting. Every 12 years from date of new or last hydrotest every basic fire extinguisher needs to be hydrotested as per manufactures specification. These tests are crucial considering these fire extinguishers are pressure vessels”.

Fire Extinguisher Recharge

Extinguishers that have been used or accidentally discharged can be brought in for a recharge. Once a fire extinguisher has been discharged or partially discharged it will need to be recharged. The recharge service involves removal of remaining powder, cleaning and lubricating of mechanical mechanisms and refilling of appropriate extinguishing agent. This service is indicated on the service collar around the neck of the container.
